Root bark for beginners: how to start safely

12 October 2026

If you want to start with iboga root bark for the first time, you should above all know two things: what matters in quality, and that a good start begins with honest preparation, not with the order. I have been supporting people who are new to this for 15 years, and most questions at the beginning are about exactly these two points.

You will find the short answer to the question of how to start with iboga under How do I start with iboga?. This post goes into detail about root bark.

What is root bark actually?

Root bark is the most original form of iboga: the bark of the root, unprocessed, just as it comes from the plant. We grow our root bark ourselves on our field in Ghana and harvest it there. Unlike extracts or HCl, root bark contains the plant's entire alkaloid spectrum, not just an isolated part.

For newcomers, this is often the first point I explain: root bark is not a standardised product like a tablet. It is a natural product, and that is exactly why so much depends on the quality of each batch.

Why do many beginners start with root bark instead of another form?

From my work, I know it like this: root bark is the most obvious form for a first contact, because it is the basic form of the plant. Many orient themselves by it first, before they think about other forms such as TA (total alkaloid) or HCl.

I do not advise anyone to use a particular form. But I say openly what I feel myself: for me, root bark is softer and warmer than the processed forms, because the whole spectrum is still in it. It is best to form your own picture. If you are new, you should first understand what you are holding in your hands before you decide on a form.

What should you look out for in quality?

This is where we invest the most time. We check every delivery that leaves our field in Ghana with a thin-layer test before it is shipped. That way we see whether a batch is what it should be, and whether it has been cut or contaminated.

As a beginner, you can ask any provider: Is there a test report for the batch? Does the material come from known cultivation? Is the date of the test disclosed? Anyone who cannot or will not answer these questions is the wrong address for a first contact.

What do I advise newcomers before the first time?

If you have high blood pressure or heart problems, or take medication, talk it through with me beforehand.

What I give every newcomer: take time to prepare. Find out about origin and quality, and if you are unsure, get a personal assessment before you order anything.

Where can you get support before you start?

If you are unsure where to start or which questions are still open for you, write to me via the contact box below this post. I take time for a personal conversation before you make any decision.
